reSIDENTIAL PROGRAM - Our APPROACH
Institute of Behavioural Medicine
What's in a name?
We are an Institute of Behavioural Medicine.
Behavioural medicine is an interdisciplinary field of Residential program and clinical care that is concerned with the development and integration of biomedical, psychological, and environmental science knowledge and techniques relevant to the understanding of health and illness, and the application of this knowledge and these techniques to prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of many disorders and illnesses. Behavioural medicine occurs whenever a team of individuals use the information, thinking and methods of this towards residential program & clinical care model to treat illnesses and disorders, or to help educate people to live healthy lives.
Behavioural medicine is considered the gold standard worldwide for the treatment of a variety of health issues that include substance use disorders, trauma and stressor-related disorders, and other mood and anxiety disorders related to life events or lifestyle.
A wide variety of health professionals are involved in behavioural medicine research and practice, including doctors, psychotherapists, exercise physiologists, family physicians, health educators, physicians, nurses, nutritionists, psychiatrists and psychologists. Behavioural medicine takes a lifespan approach to health and health care.
Behavioural medicine relies on the principle that health and wellness comes from a healthy body, a healthy mind, and a healthy environment. And to treat many of the illnesses and disorders that stem from life events, or life styles, a clinical program must encompass all three. This is why we at Highlands have chosen behavioural medicine as our model for treating substance use disorders (which can be due to both life events or life style), trauma and stressor-related disorders (which are due to overwhelming life events), and issues relating to ‘burnout’ or excessive stress (which are usually due to a person’s life style)
We at the Highlands Institute of Behavioural Medicine advance this model of clinical care as the method around which our clinical program is built.
How does it
work?
Multidisciplinary team
You will not be working with just doctors, or just psychiatrists, or just therapists; you will be working with all of them and many other specialists all working with you and for you in an integrated way.
We follow the view of health as an intersection of biological, psychological and social health, also known as the biopsychosocial approach to medicine and health.
Compassion and empathy
The ultimate goal in Behavioural Medicine is to build the capacity for self-directed health.
Behavioural medicine encourages an institutional-style Residential program that is characterised by compassionate and empathic curiosity, and a collaborative approach between clients and professionals, as opposed to a ‘top-down’ approach used elsewhere.
Why are we doing things this way in our Residential program?
Here at the Highlands Recovery, we are not in the business of creating health, wellness and recovery that lasts a few weeks, months or years; our mission is to help individuals to craft a recovery that will grow with them as they grow, change with them as their lives and needs change, and have the ability to last the entire lifespan.
We believe in Recovery that lasts a lifetime.
